The Australian flag. The design of our capital city. Melbourne’s trams. The Sydney Harbour Bridge. Even Waltzing Matilda.
What do they have in common? None of them would exist without women. But how many people know their names?
Only 4% of statues in Australia are of women. That gap says so much about who we choose to remember.
Through the monuments we build and the names we remember, we’ve been sent a loud message: women haven’t shaped history.
That invisibility doesn’t just erase the past; it shapes our present. It entrenches inequality by normalising the undervaluing of women’s work, leadership, and agency, and fuels a culture that enables violence against women.
She Shapes History exists to change that.
If we want more respect for women today, we first need to recognise the women who shaped our history.
Through walking tours, digital storytelling, and partnerships with cultural institutions, we make women’s stories impossible to forget.
Since 2021, more than 15,000 people have joined us on a tour, and we’re aiming to welcome over 10,000 in the next twelve months alone. Our digital content reaches more than a million people every month, and our travel guide takes readers on a feminist road trip across Australia.
But changing how Australia remembers its past is only the beginning.
When we can see the women who shaped history, we can see how we can shape it too. We can shape history.
