Craig’s Hut Discovery Hike – Family Friendly (Half Day)

Craig’s Hut is one of Victoria’s most iconic places and a must to see for anyone visiting the Victorian High Country.

It was a movie set built especially for the film The Man from Snowy River in 1982 and was named after the family that lived there. The lead actor, Jim Craig was played by Tom Burlinson. The hut standing today is the 4th version. Version 3 burnt down by wild fire on 11 December 2006 and the hut was again rebuilt in 2007. The original hut was a movie set only and had no floor. It has been replaced with a more robust version as it became popular with visitors.

After the briefing formalities, our base camp manager will drive you to the start of the hiking track, through a beautiful Alpine Ash forest with occasional views of Mt Cobbler. The hiking track is well maintained. It winds its way up towards Craig’s Hut through a forest of towering trees that gradually change to beautiful Snow Gums. Along the track, you will encounter a couple of short steep sections that will give you a little cardio workout, but nothing too strenuous. Regular stops along the way provide an opportunity to take in your surroundings and to enjoy the views.

Upon reaching Craig’s Hut you will have free time to explore this wonderful icon and to snap a few memorable pics. Grab a cup of coffee, tea or juice and a yummy pastry, sit back, relax and soak up the views. About an hour later, you will retrace your steps back down the track where our base camp manager will be waiting to transport you back to TBJ via Howqua Gap, completing the full Circuit Road circle. Along the way you will enjoy more breathtaking views of the Victorian High Country.

The entire drive is on an unsealed road.

Meet your guide and base camp manager at Telephone Box Junction (TBJ) at 8:30 am, 30 minutes prior to the start of the tour.

Telephone Box Junction is accessible by a 2WD vehicle and there is plenty of parking. The road is unsealed, but well graded and easy to travel on. Care should be taken on mountain roads at all times.

Children: This tour is suitable for families with children as young as 6 years old.
