Named after the historic Point Nepean Quarantine Station, this is one of Port Phillip’s most fascinating drift dive sites. Located off the old Quarantine Station, this area combines natural beauty with rich maritime history.
The quarantine station operated for over a century, from the early 1850s until around 1950. During that time, hundreds of ships anchored nearby, undergoing health inspections to prevent the spread of disease into Melbourne. Today, the remnants of that era still rest beneath the surface.
What makes this site truly exciting is the chance to spot historical artefacts discarded from those old sailing vessels. Divers have found six large anchors, old bottles, china plates, bowls, cups, clay jugs, and even 9-inch black powder gun shells. Remarkable discoveries include intact crockery from shipping giants such as White Star Line, P&O, Black Ball Packets, Pacific Steam Navigation Company, A.U.S.N.C., and even a full carving plate from the Albert Star. One day, it's just sand — the next, it’s an underwater museum.
This site is accessible at any tide or during slack water. However, it’s best experienced between slackwaters, when drift diving allows you to effortlessly cover more ground and increase your chances of finding treasures.
Although the reef is relatively light and the bottom is mostly sandy, marine life occasionally surprises — from Spider Crabs and Stingrays to pods of Dolphins and even the odd Seal passing by.
Whether you're a history buff, a drift diving fan, or simply curious about what lies beneath, the Quarantine Station dive site offers a unique and rewarding underwater adventure.
