The J4 Submarine, also known as the Shallow, 26 Meter, 27 Meter, or the 90 Foot Broken Sub, is a fascinating piece of WWI maritime history and now an exhilarating dive site for both divers. The wreck rests in the Victorian Ships' Graveyard, Bass Strait, lying on its keel in a North-South orientation, with its bow facing out toward the sea, set against a rocky seabed.
The stern of the J4 Submarine nearly blends into the surrounding reef (see also Sub Reef). During its scuttling, the bow section broke away, exposing the forward torpedo tubes and modifications to the bow. This makes the torpedo tubes easily accessible to scuba divers without the need for penetration. The conning tower remains intact and in excellent condition.
Scuba divers can explore the submarine through various hatch openings. However, penetration of the wreck should be approached with caution—being shallower than other wrecks, the J4 is particularly vulnerable to surge. Unaware divers can be unexpectedly swept through the wreck’s interior. On the plus side, the surge prevents silting, making the site one of Melbourne’s top dive spots under the right conditions.
Inside the J4 Submarine, the atmosphere is often surprisingly tranquil, with beams of light filtering through cracks and holes in the hull. Divers can explore the bulkheads, which once reinforced the submarine against the immense pressure of deep water. While the engine has been removed, the engine bed is still visible at the stern. The broken bow section of the J4 Submarine houses four torpedo tubes, which are easily spotted with a torch, especially when positioning yourself between the bow and the main body.
